Jack Tallarico may be Connecticut's 1970 champion high school baseball player, but he feels like the world’s biggest imposter. Each time he steps up to bat, he prays he can hit his shame out of his life. He finds a reprieve from his family’s disgrace by excelling in sports while his twin brother, Kerry, hides his anguish working beneath the hoods of broken-down cars. When Jack meets Paula, the girl who offers the future he believes will save him, they fall in love while Kerry secretly covets her. After Jack and Paula marry and Jack’s career in professional baseball takes off, Kerry goes to fight in Vietnam, and trouble for all of them isn’t far behind for all of them. Fortunate Son runs the bases of compassion and growth and solidarity in family, and Jack’s maturity, in the face of the toughest odds, proves the answers to our prayers lie within us and the power to change is divine.

I found this book disturbing yet brilliant. Joan Shott's beautiful writing style gave comfort to the harsh and taboo subject matter. As I journeyed through the lives and decisions made by Jack, Paula, and Kerry, I worried and supported them as if I knew them personally. Long after I finished the book I found myself missing and wondering about them as well. A definite must read. Well done!Product details

Fortunate Son edition by Joan Shott Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Again, Joan Shott has written a novel with great characters, people we all have known in our lives. You'll want to support them as they struggle to survive their pasts and have fulfilling lives. Ms. Shott handles the issues of sexual abuse and domestic violence with sensitivity.
Told with unflinching honesty and rich detail, Fortune Son depicts a slow, steady arc of change, not only for its well drawn characters, but for our culture as a whole. We watch Jack and Kerry and Paula make choices that reflect their own internal battles, and then witness their struggles as they unravel their own truth from how they think the world is supposed to be.
From a Catholic family in small-town Connecticut, twins Jack and Kerry react to the deep dark secret of incest in very different ways, but neither boy escapes the legacy of shame and deep-rooted feelings of inferiority. They try to prove their worth by leveraging their talents and going after their dreams - Jack yearns to be a professional baseball player, and Kerry wants to return to his hometown, after discharge from the Vietnam War, and start his own business. Paula, a young woman with her own secrets, has the hearts of both boys and is conflicted in her dreams and desires. Joan Shott has captured the fantasies and agonies of young people struggling with powerful forces, and who, for survival's sake, must acknowledge the gifts they have received through fateful adversity.
Can first loves endure - especially first loves based on the need to escape or to prove your worth? That's the question at the heart of this book and what draws you in. Time and place are important in Fortunate Son and the 1970s are expertly drawn, putting you in the moment with brothers Jack and Kerry - and sweetheart Paula - as they maneuver their ways from less-than-perfect childhoods to become adults. They each have their own methods of doing so, and that's what creates a story that makes you want to keep reading.
